In the anime, Angelina sends Grell with Ciel so that Sebastian can teach her how to be a better butler. As a butler, she was not very competent, leading to Angelina scolding her often. Grell disguised herself as Angelina's butler in order to decrease suspicion.

Grell offered her assistance to Angelina, and the two continued their murders, becoming the criminal known as Jack the Ripper. The two bonded over their inability to bear children due to Angelina's accident and Grell's male body. When she arrived, she was impressed by the violence of Angelina’s crime. Grell, a grim reaper, arrived at the scene of the crime in order to collect the soul of the woman Angelina had killed. The pair first met after Angelina committed the first murder in the series of murders attributed to Jack the Ripper.
